Back in the Day
1993 World Solar Challenge, Australia. As Electrical Engineering Team Leader for San Diego State University's solar car team, I learned how to solve complex problems through careful measurement, collaboration, and evidence. Those same principles apply at the IRL Data Project.
Tad Simmons is an engineer, entrepreneur, and longtime advocate for applying data and systems thinking to complex environmental and health challenges.
With backgrounds in engineering, sustainability, and technology, he founded IRL Data Project to create a practical way for communities to investigate real-world questions that often fall outside traditional research and healthcare systems.
His goal is to make independent testing more accessible, encourage open sharing of results and experiences, and build a growing public knowledge base that helps everyone make more informed decisions.
IRL Data Project was founded in Southern California, where world-class medical institutions, biotechnology, environmental science, and innovation exist alongside one of the nation's largest and most diverse populations. It is a place where questions about chronic illness, healthy aging, nutrition, food, water quality, environmental exposures, and everyday products inspire tremendous research, curiosity, and technological development.
Yet there are also economic, technical, and institutional barriers between people and the answers they seek. Independent testing can be expensive, information is often difficult to interpret, and valuable real-world experiences are rarely gathered and shared in ways that help others.
IRL Data Project aims to dissolve some of those barriers by making independent testing more accessible, making outstanding clinical support more visible to those who need it most, and gathering, through scientific processes, information about the commonly experienced impacts and benefits of foods, water, products, and environmental exposures experienced by people every day.
We believe that every investigation has the potential to help not only one individual, but many others asking similar questions. By supporting independent testing, sharing actual results (with permission) and experiences, and building a growing body of practical knowledge, we hope to make the path from questions to answers clearer for everyone.
